Dublin Spartans 14 Ashbourne Giants 22 at Corkagh Park
The Ashbourne Giants ran off with the lead late in the game in a 22-14 victory over Dublin Spartans on Sunday.
The Giants got off to a super start scoring 4 runs in the first innings.
The Spartans came straight back at them with 3 in return. Ireland’s star pitcher Brendan Scott drove in two when he singled in his first turn at bat this season.
The Spartans ploughed on, turning it into an 8-4 lead after 3 innings.
The Giants scored three in the fifth to make it 8-7 Spartans but the Spartans kept going scoring 2 more runs staying in the lead 10 - 7.
In the seventh, the Giants fought back scoring three quick runs to tie the score. The Giants then took the lead for good when Frank Andrews induced Eduardo Hernandez to hit into a fielder's choice, but two runs scored.
Ryan Wiebe led the Giants to victory by driving in four runs. He went 3-for-6 at the plate proving his place in the Giants A setup is no fluke.
Manager Jaime Cuevas also pitched 6 strong innings proving he’ll be a force to be reckoned with this season. He’s definitely one of the smartest pitchers in the country mixing his pitches up seamlessly keeping the Spartans batters guessing every time.
The Giants tallied 16 hits in the game. Fionn Gallahar-Hall and Ryan Wiebe had three hits each to lead the Giants while Sal Rizo, Andy Croft and Miguel Moreno had multiple hit games.
This Sunday’s game against the Hurricanes will be quite a battle for the Giants.
Definitely one to catch if you’re in Corkagh Park on Sunday morning.
