Bartolo Colon spirals further as Angels beat Rangers, 9-3; Ohtani hits two home runs

ARLINGTON, Texas _ Right-hander Bartolo Colon is limping toward the finish of the season and possibly his career.

Colon had another ineffective start for the Rangers on Wednesday in a 9-3 loss to the Los Angeles Angels at Globe Life Park. He gave up five runs, four earned, in four innings.

Colon is 7-12 with a 5.55 ERA. Among qualifying major leaguers only Chicago White Sox rookie right-hander Lucas Giolito has a higher ERA, at 5.85.

Colon has been on a downward arc since late May. He is 5-10 with a 7.04 ERA in his last 17 starts. The Rangers are 6-11 in those games.

The performance makes it clear that the Rangers will not bring back the 45-year-old Colon for next season.

Before the game, Angels rookie right-hander Shohei Ohtani learned that it's recommended he undergo Tommy John surgery. Ohtani started at designated hitter and went 4-for-4 with two homers _ a solo shot in the fifth inning, and a two-run shot in the eighth.
