April 30--Bartlett native Vinnie Hinostroza, one of the Chicago Blackhawks' top prospects, is set to embark on another step in his development toward becoming an NHL player.
Hinostroza will leave for Russia on Saturday morning where he will participate for Team USA in the IIHF Men's World Championship running from May 6-22 in Moscow and St. Petersburg. The 22-year-old was added to the USA roster Thursday and called the opportunity "an honor."
"Anytime you wear the USA sweater it's truly a privilege," Hinostroza said Friday. "I'm excited to represent my country and go over to Russia. It's always any player's goal to keep improving and getting better. During my first year in the pros I think I improved a lot and I feel like this is just another step I need to take to getting to the final goal of playing full-time in the NHL. I'm really excited for the opportunity. I just want to make the best of it."
A sixth-round pick (169th overall) in the 2012 draft, Hinostroza appeared in seven games with the Hawks this season, accumulating six penalty minutes. The center is regarded as a top prospect and figures to get a shot at winning a job in training camp in the fall.
Hinostroza made his professional debut with Rockford of the AHL and led the IceHogs in scoring with 51 points (18 goals, 33 assists) in 66 games. Prior to turning pro, Hinostroza spent two standout seasons at Notre Dame.
"In the years since I got drafted I've just wanted to work hard and get better and I think I've done that and want to continue," Hinostroza said. "I have a lot of support from everyone here in Bartlett. I can't thank my family and friends enough. I'm just excited for this new opportunity."
