Bartender quits job after being scolded by boss for drinking on his day off

Disputes with the boss at work are a big no-no, and as we become more experienced in our careers we learn pretty well how to use diplomacy to avoid them.

For the most part, our bosses are reasonable people and so we do what they ask of us without argument - but for some employees, their seniors demand far too much of them.

One bartender who had had enough of his boss's unreasonable requests has shared the brutal way he handed in his notice when he reached the end of is tether, The Sun reports.

Taking to Reddit, the now ex-barman posted a series of messages he'd exchanged with his employer - who waited until 3am to tell his employee he was needed at work for a long shift in just eight hours' time.

The bartender shared the text exchange (Reddit)

In the screenshots, the bar owner asks the employee to come in that day at 11am for a shift that will finish at 10pm.

When the bloke replies to politely say he won't be accepting the shift as it's his day off, the boss becomes more insistent.

He writes: "You need to be a team player. It isn't all about you, please come in tomorrow."

Furious at the unreasonable request, the bartender asks his boss why he's being asked to come into work with just eight hours of notice.

He also explains that he's been out and has had a few drinks - and doesn't want to come into work with a hangover on a day he was supposed to have off.

Still, the boss is insistent that the employee comes in.

He replies: “You need to stay ready for work, getting too drunk is not a good look if you can’t stay prepared sometimes things happen and we need to cover each other.”

By now the tone of the conversation escalates, with the bartender questioning his boss's logic in asking a bartender not to have a drink on their time off work.

He adds if he'd been told about the short staffing problem sooner, he might have been more inclined to give up his day off.

The barman also asks his manager why he can't do the shift himself if he's that desperate for staff.

After the heated exchange, the boss responds with a warning that they need to have a conversation about the bartender's attitude.

But by now, it's clear the bartender has checked out of the conversation - and his job.

He tells his boss he'll easily find work elsewhere as there are "dozens of places hiring around here," adding he's "fed up" with his boss's behaviour.

Realising he might have made a mistake in alienating his employee, the boss asks him to call and insists he's making a mistake because he's "drunk" - but the bartender makes it clear he's made up his mind.
