Bartender in Irish pub sends strong Christmas message after 'appalling' abuse from customers

A bartender in an Irish pub is pleading with customers to respect staff this Christmas after some workers received 'appalling' abuse.

The anonymous pub worker's post on Reddit has made a big impression after they told how staff in pubs have been treated since they reopened.

The annoyed worker begins: "I've barely been back in work for two weeks and the level of abuse my colleagues and I have received for merely enforcing government guidelines that never ceased being enforced before the last lockdown anyway is absolutely appalling."

They go on to plead with people to have respect and follow the rules, not "showing up to sit at a six person table with eight people in your group because the last pub let ye sit together."

With a lack of mask wearing and people asking can they stay for longer a particular gripe.

The Reddit user adds: "I am making this post after a bad night at work, but it's not a particularly bad night.

"There needs to be an awareness that service staff aren't just dealing with you, we're dealing with hundreds of people per day, and every precaution that each individual customer takes means that we feel that little bit more comfortable a bout maybe seeing our loved ones this year.

"Because that's what matters, I'd usually hesitate to put bartenders and wait staff in the same echelon as essential shop staff, and even teachers and medical staff, but an economy-driven government and society has decided that we should go back to work, working at a reduced capacity and increased outgoings that will eventually drive even the most prosperous independent pubs into the ground to the benefit of chainpubs."
