Bartender admits to 'ruining' wedding after quitting mid-shift over rude guests

Weddings are notoriously difficult to organise, and with so many parts to consider on the day, it takes a whole team of people to ensure things run smoothly.

But one bartender has claimed she recently worked at a wedding where she was the only staff member on duty for around 200 guests, with no one to help her make drinks, fetch clean glasses, clean up, or handle any complaints.

And after finding herself completely swamped, and with wedding guests complaining that she wasn't making their drinks fast enough, the bartender decided she'd had enough - and quit her job in the middle of her shift.

The woman admitted she had likely "ruined" the wedding reception after ditching it and leaving guests without any drinks or an explanation for her sudden absence, but said she doesn't regret the decision to leave.

In a lengthy post on Mumsnet, the single mum explained she initially loved her part-time job at a hotel bar, but it had become increasingly stressful due to what she described as "terrible working conditions" that had caused several of her co-workers to quit.

She said that on the day of the wedding, there were only three bar staff working and three separate functions to attend, meaning they each had to handle an entire event themselves.

The bartender also said that the managers of the hotel left at 8pm, which left her dealing with 200 wedding guests completely alone. The woman also claims that she was subjected to sexual harassment and generally being "shouted at".

She wrote: "The managers left at 8 pm, just as it was kicking off. Our bars shut at 2 am so I knew I was in for it. The bar was always rammed with at least 6 people at any given time. By 11 pm I craved the sweet release of death.

"I was dealing with sexual harassment from several different blokes and had nobody to back me up. I kept getting shouted at for slow service, people spending literally 10 minutes arguing about who was paying for what round whilst other people shouted at me to serve them, people demanding free drinks, and being called a 'tight cow' for giving £5 change in coins instead of a note.

"I couldn't stand it. People who weren't even part of the wedding kept wandering in as well expecting to be served by me."

The woman said she then ran out of glasses and had no one on hand to bring her any more, so she had to leave the bar to collect some clean ones, which only made the wedding guests more irate.

When she came back, she went to pour a pint to find that the keg had run out and needed replacing, so she had to leave once again to head down to the basement to change the kegs - which is when she realised she could just walk out and leave the stress-inducing bar job behind her.

She added: "I went to the basement to change the beers and then had a panic attack because I knew what I was in for when I got back. Insults and abuse. Then I had an epiphany. 'I don't have to do this. Nobody is forcing me to be here. I'm not their slave.'

"So I just went to the office to clock out and f***ed off home (it was about 11:30 pm at this point) where I spent the rest of the evening drinking wine and watching TV. I did feel slightly guilty that my actions may have ruined a wedding reception but then I didn't care, it's their own fault for being ****s to me. They weren't a nice lot at all."

The following day, the woman received an "incensed" text message from her manager, and the wedding party have since left "terrible reviews" online about the disastrous reception - but she still stands by her decision to quit on the spot.

And commenters have backed her decision too, with many saying they would have done the same thing.

One person said: "You were being harassed, bullied and verbally abused. I don't blame you for removing yourself from the situation at all."

While another wrote: "Well done. I would have left too. Your mental health and well-being come first."
