Barshaw Park nature project helps folk bring birds to their gardens

Gardens across Renfrewshire will be welcoming some new feathered friends thanks to a community project.

Friends of Barshaw Park have given away 200 birdhouses and nesting boxes to families across the district.

The group had hoped to welcome people to the Walled Garden in the Paisley park for family workshops to learn about wildlife and construct bird boxes for their gardens.

But with the pandemic scuppering those plans, the volunteers adapted the project to give away birdhouses and nesting boxes as well as craft kits for children to construct their own birdhouses.

Irene McDonald, secretary of Friends of Barshaw Park, said the project had been a great success so far.

Irene explained: “We encouraged our members and supporters to take part in RSPB Great Garden Birdwatch in the last weekend in January this year, and with support from Renfrewshire Council, we followed this up by giving birdhouses and nesting boxes to local families.

“Just a few days after starting the project all 200 boxes and craft kits were allocated and are being delivered and collected this week.

“We are delighted that it has been so popular.

“We are also issuing a chart to enable everyone to identify the birds in their garden and the park, and giving advice on providing suitable nesting materials and the best food for wild birds.”

The group has worked with Feel Good Gallowhill which helped distribute the bird boxes and craft kits. A number were also given out to local nurseries and care homes.

Irene added: “We hope they will bring joy to the children and residents.

“We would like everyone to send us photographs of the birdhouses in their garden, and keep us informed of the birdlife in their gardens, especially when the birds take up residence and start to raise their chicks.”

Irene said they have a great group of volunteers and want to be able to continue delivering projects to benefit the community.
