Bars in Houses of Parliament do not have to close under 10pm rule

Bars in the Houses of Parliament do not have to comply with the 10pm curfew which sees pubs and restaurants across the UK having to close their doors.

According to The Times, the bars and eateries used by MPs and Lords as well as their staff will not have to close.

They also do not have to collect contact details for customers - unlike every other hospitality business in the country.

The bars in the Houses of Parliament fall under the definition of a 'workplace canteen' - meaning they are allowed to stay open if no other suitable alternative is available.

Some of Parliament’s bars have reopened after the lockdown including the Pugin Room, Strangers’ Dining Room, the Adjournment and the Members’ Smoking Room.

A spokeswoman for the House of Commons told The Times: “We continue to follow social distancing and cleaning measures as a Covid-secure workplace in order to reduce the transmission of the disease through social distancing signage, one way systems, socially distanced seating arrangements, contactless payments, marshalling and additional cleaning.”
