Barry school closed over flooding fears as Storm Jorge brings heavy rain

A Barry high school has closed early over flooding fears.

Arrangements were made for pupils at St Richard Gwyn Catholic High School to leave early on Friday afternoon as heavy rain hit the region.

A recorded message on the school's telephone system said: "Due to the flood risk we have made a decision to close the school."

It said pupils would be put on buses at 1.30pm.

Parents collecting their children were to be at the school by 1.40pm.

Heavy rain has flooded railway lines and roads across the region.

A yellow weather warning for rain has been issued for parts of Wales on Friday.

The Met Office says that up to 70mm of rain could fall over high ground in Wales between now and 6am on Saturday.

It states: "Spells of heavy rain will affect parts of Wales from early Friday through to Saturday morning.

"Between 20-40 mm rain is likely to fall quite widely, with 50-70 mm over high ground, and perhaps as much as 100 mm in one or two very prone upland spots.

"The heaviest rain is most likely on Friday night before clearing eastwards on Saturday morning."

There is flooding on the main railway line between Swansea and Cardiff and driving conditions on the M4 and A470 have been described as treacherous.
