Barry McGuigan pays tribute to 'our precious Nika' on the anniversary of her passing

Former champion boxer Barry McGuigan has paid tribute to his daughter Danika, who died one year ago today.

In a brief post on social media, McGuigan said: "One year on and our hearts are broken for our precious Nika"

Danika passed away last year after what her family said was a "brief but brave battle against cancer".

Their statement, released last year, read: "It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of our beautiful daughter and sister, Danika 'Nika' McGuigan.

"After a brief but brave battle against cancer, Nika passed away peacefully in the early hours of Tuesday, July 23, surrounded by her loving family.

"As a family we are devastated and ask for complete privacy during this difficult period to allow us to grieve for our Nika."

Danika, known as Nika to her friends and family, was an actress who appeared in several films including Philomena, Mammal and upcoming film Wildlife.

She also starred in hit TV series Can't Cope, Won't Cope, an Irish comedy-drama which ran for two series and told the story of a group of twenty-something friends from Cork who share a house in Dublin.

Barry won the featherweight world title in 1985 when he beat Eusebio Pedroza at Loftus Road, home of Queen's Park Rangers.
