Barry Keoghan has addressed the cheating rumours that swirled around his relationship with Sabrina Carpenter, saying the chatter forced him to step back from the public eye.
Keoghan, who dated the “Espresso” singer for around a year back in 2023, spoke of the much-publicised romance on the latest episode of the Friends Keep Secrets podcast with Benny Blanco, Lil Dicky and Kristin Batalucco.
The Saltburn actor said that in recent times, he has stopped socialising because of the “not true” cheating “narrative” that he was never able to speak on.
“I have been avoiding stuff. I’ve stopped going to events. I’ve stopped socialising, and it’s because there was a narrative out there that was never really sort of even spoken on,” Keoghan said.
“[It’s] a narrative that’s not true and I never confirmed or said anything about it and I just disappeared,” he added.
When Lil Dicky pressed Keoghan on whether the narrative was infidelity, he confirmed as much and said the backlash led him to delete his social media profiles.
“I’m not asking for people to become my fan and like me because that’s not normal. I’m asking for people to stop assuming and also stop jumping on this narrative and attacking me and dragging me down in any way you can,” Keoghan said.
“I’m not saying this for pity. Why is it cool to hop on and beat someone up?”
Keoghan stopped short of mentioning Carpenter by name, saying it’s “hard” to address the topic because he “never want[s] to speak on behalf of other people and also never want[s] to mention other people or involve them”.
Later in the podcast, Keoghan spoke to the backlash he receives more broadly, saying “there’s a lot of hatred towards me for looking like this”.
While some sources claimed “conflicting schedules” were behind the pair’s late-2024 breakup, other unconfirmed rumours suggested Keoghan had cheated on Carpenter with TikTok star Breckie Hill.
In the ensuing controversy, Keoghan dropped a social media statement slamming those who had crossed “too many lines” before deactivating his Instagram account.
“I can only sit and take so much. My name has been dragged across the internet in ways I usually don’t respond to. I have to respond now because it’s getting to a place where there are too many lines being crossed,” he wrote on X.
“The messages I have received no person should ever have to read. Absolute lies, hatred, disgusting commentary about my appearance, character, how I am as a parent and every other inhumane thing you can imagine.”
At the height of their romance, Keoghan appeared in the music video for Carpenter’s song “Please Please Please” and was spotted in the crowd of her 2024 Coachella set.
These days, Carpenter is busy coasting off her recent Coachella headlining gig and Keoghan is at work on The Beatles biopics, in which he’ll portray drummer Ringo Starr.
Hopefully by the time those movies roll around, fans will remember that all you need is love.
