Barry Jenkins has debuted the first trailer for his first film since Best Picture Oscar winner Moonlight.
Titled If Beale Street Could Talk, the film follows Tish and Fonny, a couple ripped apart by a false rape accusation. The project is adapted from James Baldwin's 1974 novel and Jenkins revealed the footage on what would have been the author's 94th birthday.
Kiki Layne and Stephen James star in the lead roles with Regina King (The Leftovers), Bryan Tyree Henry (Atlanta's Paper Boi) and Chi-Raq breakout Tayonnah Parris also appearing.
Jenkins wrote the film simultaneously with Moonlight in 2013. The latter would go on to win Best Picture at the 2017 Academy Award (eventually) beating out La La Land becoming the first to do so with an all-black cast and LGBTQ lead.
The hard-working director's next film will be The Underground Railroad, an adaptation of Colson Whitehead's novel for Amazon Studios.
If Beale Street Could Talk will be premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and will be released in the UK on 18 January.
