Barry Island car parks closed by council following reports of crowds at beach

Car parks in Barry Island have been closed by Vale of Glamorgan Council after crowds of people were seen at the beach in recent days.

Officers from South Wales Police are conducting patrols on Barry Island today to ensure those out are following the coronavirus restrictions.

They will also be conducting car checks in the area.

It comes as scenes of the beach and promenade were pictured full of people in the days after Christmas, despite rules stating people should not travel for exercise.

A statement posted to South Wales Police's Facebook page said: "Officers are patrolling Barry Island today and car parks have been closed by Vale of Glamorgan Council.

"Please remember that Welsh Government restrictions state that exercise should start and finish at your home – you shouldn’t be driving to these places.

"We know it’s hard, but we urge you to do all you can to help prevent the spread of Covid.

"We have stepped up patrols and will be stopping cars to check whether the journey is essential.

"Please understand that we are doing our best. However, we can’t be everywhere all of the time, it’s up to us all to do the right thing."

Wales is currently under Alert Level 4 restrictions, meaning people must stay at home, except for very limited purposes.

Exercise, however, is one of the things people are allowed to get out and about for.

These are the full rules on driving to exercise.

According to the Welsh Government: "Exercise is important for physical and mental health, and you can leave home as often as you like to exercise as long as you do so from home and alone or with members of your household or support bubble (and/or a carer)."

The Government's FAQs specifically point out that exercise should begin and end at home - meaning people should not drive to the location where they plan to exercise.

They state: "Exercise should be undertaken locally – from home or as close as possible to the home. In general this should not involve people driving to a location away from home for this purpose. "
