Barry Island Big Beach Build: Rules, prizes and how to enter the sandcastle competition

Nothing says summer like a trip to the beach and building a sandcastle. With temperatures set to soar this weekend it is the perfect time for the 2022 Barry Island Big Beach Build, the annual Barry Island sand castle competition.

Taking place at Barry Island's Whitmore Bay the Big Beach Build is free to attend and also free to take part in. The top three sandcastles will all win a prize with first place winning a family set of bodyboards, second place winning a family surf lesson for six, and third place winning beach bats, balls, and buckets.

When is the Barry Island Big Beach Build?

The Barry Island Big Beach Build will take place on Saturday, August 13. The building of the sandcastles takes place from 12pm to 4pm and if you are taking part in the competition you can sign in with the Beach Academy from 11am.

Judging will take place from 4.15pm to 4.45pm and the winners will be announced at 5pm. There will also be beach challenges, including Beach Ball Golf, to enjoy until 4pm.

How do I enter the competition?

You can register your team online here. Your team can be up to six people and you can build your sandcastle from 12pm to 4pm.

Your team will be given a contest flag with a number that you need to put on your castle. Only teams with flags will be considered for prizes. You will need to bring all your own building equipment yourself as nothing will be provided.

What are the rules?

Teams must be no more than six people and have a team name. You must register your team and teams can not be adults only, there must be at least one child under 16 taking part.

Your sandcastle must be recognisable as a ‘castle' and be made entirely out of the sand. The sand castle can be any size. Building equipment, accessories, and decoration must be provided by you, the team.

How much is the competition to enter?

Entry is completely free and it is free to attend the event as a spectator.
