Barry Geraghty says Champ 'in great form' ahead of Kelso run

Barry Geraghty says Champ is in 'great form' ahead of his return to action.

The JP McManus-owned eight-year-old was last seen when falling in the Dipper Novices' Chase at Cheltenham on New Year's Day.

He is set to run at Kelso next weekend in his final start before the Cheltenham Festival and Geraghty feels last year's Ballymore runner-up is not feeling any ill effects from that fall at Prestbury Park.

He wrote in his Sporting Index column: "I schooled Champ at Nicky Henderson’s on Friday morning and he was in great form. He jumped and felt really well, so I was very happy with him.

"He doesn’t seem to be feeling any ill effects of the fall at Cheltenham and all roads lead to Kelso next week. Hopefully we can get things back on track ahead of the Festival in March."

One horse who Geraghty won't be getting back on this season is two-time Champion Hurdle winner Buveur D’Air, who is out until next term.

Geraghty added: "He’s [Champ] a horse to look forward to and so is Buveur D’Air who is coming along well since getting that injury in the Fighting Fifth.

"We won’t see him again this season, but he should be back next season and fingers crossed he’s back to his best."
