Barry Fry backs West Ham to remain a top-six team if David Moyes is given a new contract

David Moyes took over a West Ham team that were only out of the drop zone on goal difference and faced with the unimaginable prospect of relegation.

Fast forward 15 months and the Hammers are just two points off the top-four with only nine games remaining in the Premier League this season.

The turnaround is nothing short of incredible and Moyes is rightly getting credit for the job he has done at the club.

Alongside Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola Moyes is seen as a strong contender for the League Managers Association Manager of the Year award, something he has already won three times, more than any other manager bar Sir Alex Ferguson.

Moyes is yet to agree a new deal at West Ham, although barring a calamitous finish to the season the boss will have the option of automatically extending his deal if the team finishes above 13th in the league, a near certainty for a club currently in 5th place.

Peterborough director of football Barry Fry thinks the club's co-owners David Gold and David Sullivan should do everything they can to extend the Scot's deal at the club.

"If I was the two Davids or if I was advising them, I would say get him on a long–term contract," Fry told Football FanCast.

"Let him build your club and let him challenge for the top six because both Sullivan and Gold are not afraid to put their money where their mouth is and back their manager, which they have [done] in the past.”

Moyes has previous with building a club over a long period of time. Before taking over from Sir Alex and Manchester United the Hammers boss spend an 11-year spell with Everton taking them from near the bottom to European football.

As with the West Ham job Moyes took over an Everton team mired in relegation woe and in a feat he would repeat almost 20 years on at the Hammers he led the club away from safety and up the table the following year.

His first full season in charge at Goodison Park saw the Toffees finish in 7th spot, a difficult second year in charge followed with Everton once again involved in a relegation battle but the Toffees board trusted their manager and were rewarded handsomely.

In the 2004-05 season, Moyes led Everton to fourth spot and the Champions League qualifying rounds. Over the remainder of his Toffees tenure, the Scot's lowest finish was 11th place with his final seven seasons seeing Everton finish in the top eight on each occasion.

In total Moyes led Everton to Europe in four seasons, proving the owners right to stick with their man and allow him time to shape the club and the squad as he saw fit.

West Ham are still in the hunt for a Champions League spot this season and with Moyes at the helm Fry believes the club can become a regular in challenging for European places for many years to come.
