Barry Ferguson reacts to Rangers non-penalty & red card flashpoint

Barry Ferguson insists Rangers should have been awarded a penalty for a shirt pull on Cyriel Dessers

And the interim Rangers manager believes that Dani Vivian should've saw red for the foul inside the box.

Athletic Club ended Rangers' Europa League run tonight, as the hosts survived the penalty shout scare, to score a penalty of their own before Nico Williams scored the winner in the second half.

The Scottish Premiership side gave it their all, but couldn't quite manage to do enough to make it through to the semis of the competition.

But Ferguson reckons the controversial call to ignore Rangers' strong claims for a penalty was a game-changer.

He said: "I thought at the time it was a penalty. I watched it just after the ref didn't give it, and I've just watched it another three or four times. It's a penalty, it's clear as day.

"Well, it would've been a penalty and then a red card, so it changes the dynamic of the game.

"We're disappointed in the decision and the refereeing, of course.

"Then in the second half, I've just watched Nico's one (handball incident), which we were given a penalty against us with Dujon Sterling. Again, it's a clear penalty in my mind."

Then, asked about the future and if tonight had inspired him to want the job on a permanent basis, he insisted it wasn't on his mind.

"Honestly, Connie, I'm not even thinking about it," Ferguson said. "I'm thinking about tonight's level of performance.

"I need to go away. I'll be hurting over the next couple of days. But I'll be ready to come to work on Monday and tackle the last five games of the season.

"I'll deal with it at the end of the season. I'm just privileged to be in this position. To lead the club, I've been proud to play for my boyhood club, captain them, and now I've had the chance to manage.

"I'm not going to go out without a fight, and I'm going to make sure my players are like that."
