Barry Ferguson poised for Alloa job as Rangers legend set to leave Kelty Hearts

Alloa are closing in on appointing Barry Ferguson as their new manager and are hopeful of announcing the Rangers legend this week.

Ferguson is set to leave Kelty Hearts after leading the Lowland League champions into the SPFL for the first time in their history in Sunday’s play-off victory over Brechin City.

The 43-year-old’s stock is high after delivering on his three-year plan to take Kelty into the professional ranks.

And Alloa see the former Clyde manager as the man to kick-start their own promotion push after relegation from the Championship last season.

The Wasps are currently managerless after Peter Grant stood down at the end of the campaign.

Ferguson is set to hold talks with the Recreation Park outfit on Tuesday but Record Sport understands the Ibrox icon could yet be swayed by another offer in the SPFL.

However his stint at Kelty is over and he informed the Fife club of his decision to move on after Sunday’s dramatic victory at Brechin.

Ferguson was coy after that game but admitted: “I am not even thinking ahead right now.

“I just want to enjoy the night with my staff. Fair play for them putting up with me because I’m on a different planet sometimes during games.

“That’s just me. I’m passionate and demanding but they will run through brick walls for me.

“This is up there with everything I’ve done in football, 100 per cent. It’s got to be.

“I know people will say: ‘is he having a laugh?’ But the amount of work the players and I have put in to get here, it’s a brilliant achievement. They are a brilliant group and nobody can deny we deserve to be an SPFL club.

“This will live with me forever.”
