Here's what the best new build home in Britain looks like

An exemplary new build home on the outskirts of Grimsby is officially the best in Britain.

Barrow House at Hatcliffe was named Best New Individual Property at the Local Authority Building Control National Awards in London, with huge praise for the architectural team behind it.

It is the first in Lincolnshire to be brought forward under Paragraph 79, a clause which allows for exceptional design in rural areas.

Commissioned in 2016, the owners moved in this spring, with the four-bed home with large open plan living partially embedded into the Lincolnshire Wolds.

Grimsby’s ID Architecture worked with a private client to bring the substantial project forward.

Andy Inch, Rob Cook and Richard Thornton led on the team project.

They said: “It is always wonderful working on such projects, to bring forward such a proposal and see a prestigious build realised is a wonderful thing.

“From the road it appears as a small barn, clad in corten steel so it weathers over time. It blends in like pantiles and is very sympathetic.”

Expansive glazing to the front maximises the vista. “It is all about the relationship between inside and outside, and the wider view,” Mr Inch said.

“The client was looking at open countryside, so we knew the route we had to go down.

"We had a very good relationship with the local authority, it was supported well through planning committee and we are really pleased it was built out, recognised regionally and now nationally.

“It has been deemed as exemplary, going above and beyond the norm.”

The award, following May’s Yorkshire and Humber success, came alongside a cover spot on Grand Designs magazine too.

“It is a fantastic honour for ID and we hope the success we have had will act as a lever for more,” Mr Inch said. “We are working on a number of Paragraph 79 homes to hopefully this is the first of many.”

Barrow House was built by Brigg-based CLS Civil Engineering Ltd, and features a complex cantilever steel frame and concrete retaining walls.

The LABC Building Excellence Awards Grand Finals took place at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge, with 840 guests attending. It was hosted by multi award-winning comedian and Mock the Week regular Milton Jones. A total of 15 category winners were crowned.
