Barrister swaps court for comedy ahead of Edinburgh Fringe Festival run

A top barrister is performing a stand-up comedy set tonight ahead of a show at Edinburgh Festival Fringe .

David Watson, of St John's Buildings Barrister's Chambers, has practised criminal law in Liverpool for more than 20 years.

But now he'll be addressing an audience that could be even tougher than some of the judges at Liverpool Crown Court

The 51-year-old is already an accomplished playwright , as the author of 2018's successful Fringe play, Lucky Durhams.

This evening he's heading to Tusk Baltic at Cains Brewery Village in Mann Street to showcase his latest effort, titled 'Hyper-Nice'.

He said: "In an increasingly divided world, is there any point in being vaguely polite to each other or is it all superficial, passive-aggressive nonsense?

"From driving angry to abusing strangers on social media, Hyper-Nice uses stand-up to look at how we engage with our immediate and virtual surroundings.

"Is Twitter just for bullies and show-offs? Would you dare speak to people in real-life like you do on social media?"

David was called to the Bar in 1990 and practised in London for seven years, before he moved to Liverpool in 1997.

The criminal law specialist has written several plays in the past, which have been performed in London and Scotland.

Lucky Durhams was centred around the first day of the Battle of the Somme during the First World War.

David, who is originally from Durham, said: "Hyper-Nice promises a whole new direction... and a lot less death!"

Edinburgh Festival Fringe, held next month, is the world's largest arts event and a proving ground for many comedians.

Hyper-Nice will run at The Space at Surgeons Hall in the Scottish city from August 19 to 24, with tickets priced £6 to £8.

But entry is free for tonight's show, featuring special guest Cash Boyle, with doors at 7.30pm and comedy from 8.30pm.
