Barrie Cassidy reveals final Insiders tribute to 'the only panellist we lost along the way'

Barrie Cassidy is regarded as one of the finest political journalists of his generation with a career spanning 50 years.

An emotional Barrie Cassidy has revealed his final Insiders program on Sunday will feature a tribute to one of the show's most-loved guests and commentators, Matt Price.

Price, a popular and respected journalist for The Australian newspaper and a frequent guest on Insiders died in 2007 after being diagnosed with brain tumours. He was 46.

"Matt passed away just over 10 years ago and he was the only panellist we lost along the way," Cassidy told ABC News Breakfast this morning.

So for his final show, Cassidy said he and his guests would be "wearing purple on Sunday" in memory of his "great friend".

"Matt often wore purple, being a Freo Dockers fan, [but] he just claimed he liked purple anyway," Cassidy said.

Cassidy announced in March that he would be leaving Insiders on June 9, after hosting the program since it first went to air in 2001.

He confessed to having mixed feelings in the lead up to his final show.

"I've been excited about it for a while because I have a life beyond that," he said.

"But sadder, the closer I get to it and the more I reflect on what I've been doing for so long and how important it's been to me in my life, then, yes, of course I'm beginning to feel sad about it all."

Sky News' David Speers will take over as Insiders host next year.
