Barrhead pub roof collapses after boozer is torched in deliberate attack

A manhunt has been launched after an East Renfrewshire pub was torched in a deliberate attack.

Emergency services rushed to the scene after the Columba Club in Barrhead was targeted by yobs in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Fire crews battled the flames but it's believed the roof collapsed at the derelict boozer.

It's not believed there were any injuries as a result of the blaze.

A local source said: "It was set on fire and the roof collapsed.

"Fire engines were on the scene for hours.

"It was time it was demolished anyway, it was a bit of an eyesore since not been in use for years."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 4.50am on Thursday, 4 February, officers were called to a report of a fire in Darnley Road, Barrhead.

"Police attended and the fire is being treated as wilful.  Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with any information should contact 101 quoting reference 0384 of 4 February."

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were alerted at 3.32am on Thursday, February 4 to reports of a derelict building on fire at Darnley Road, Barrhead, East Renfrewshire.

“Operations Control mobilised two appliances to the scene.

“Firefighters extinguished the fire and left after ensuring the area was made safe.

“There were no reported casualties.”
