Barratt punished on bad day for property firms

UK housebuilders are suffering today, hit by worries over a weakening housing market.

Barratt Developments, which has seen its order book fall by half a billion pounds, is down 7% at 204p after Citigroup placed 7m of its shares, traders said.

Shares in rival housebuilders are also lower. Persimmon , which last month halted work on new sites, is down around 3% at 497.75p in lunchtime trading, the second biggest faller in the FTSE 100.

The FTSE 100 is down around 27 points at 6060.7. Traders will keep an eye on new home sales data from the US, which is due later this afternoon.
