MIAMI _ Kyle Barraclough was due for a hiccup. Overdue.
On the same day he was named the National League's Reliever of the Month for June, Barraclough gave up his first run since May 8 _ a two-out, game-tying double in the ninth by C.J. Cron.
But it didn't keep the Marlins from a victory.
Yadiel Rivera's infield single in the 10th gave the Marlins a 3-2 victory over the Rays in the first game of the Citrus Series.
The last-gasp heroics by Cron off one of the toughest relievers in the majors ruined Chen's bid to record his third win on a night he was outstanding. Chen gave up just three hits, walked none, and held the Rays to an unearned run. It was only the second time as a Marlin that Chen went at least six innings, gave up three or fewer hits, and did not allow an unearned run.
He didn't have much to work with, either.
The Marlins managed only two runs off Nathan Eovaldi, with the biggest of those coming on J.T. Realmuto's go-ahead homer in the fifth.
Realmuto finally cracked the Top 5 in All-Star voting Monday, but only barely, checking in at fifth in the latest voting update. But he again showed why he deserves better, cracking his 11th homer with two outs in the fifth.
The Rays scored their first run following a Starlin Castro fielding error.
Castro and Miguel Rojas, who drove in the Marlins' only other run, combined for seven of the team's 12 total hits, with Castro going 4 for 4 and Rojas going 3 for 4.
But the close-to-unhittable Barraclough failed to protect a one-run lead in the ninth. After giving up a leadoff single to Daniel Robertson, only the second hit allowed by the reliever since May 22, he retired the next two batters to bring up Cron. Cron stroked a 1-1 slider into the left field corner to score the runner from first.
That ended Barraclough's stretch of 20 1/3 scoreless innings and gave the Rays fresh life. but it was short-lived as the Marlins recorded their first extra-inning win since May 1.
Brian Anderson walked to start the 10th and advanced to third on a Realmuto single. That brought up Rivera, who slapped a high-hopper to third that scored Anderson.
