Barrackpore biryani outlet shooting: 1 held in Kolkata

KOLKATA: The detective wing of the Barrackpore commissionerate on Wednesday arrested a local criminal in connection with the shooting at a popular biryani outlet at Barrackpore in which two persons, including an employee and a customer, were shot at on Monday afternoon while the shop was crowded by customers.

The shop is located off Barrackpore-Barasat Road at busy intersection Wireless More adjacent to Kalyani Expressway. Accused Abhishek Jha was arrested from a hideout at Barrackpore’s Mohanpur. He has been remanded in police custody for 12 days after being produced in a Barrackpore subdivisional court on Thursday.

The biryani shop owner, Bapi Das, a resident of Mohanpur, however, claimed that it was pre-planned and deliberately carried out by the local extortionists to close down the shop. “Earlier, my house came under attack by the goons. They had also hurled bombs at my shop earlier,” Das said. “We hope to arrest all culprits involved,” said Manoj Kr Verma, police commissioner, Barrackpore.
