The Country Fire Service (CFS) believes a lightning strike sparked a house fire in the Barossa Valley last night after a cold front swept through southern South Australia.
A second cold front is expected to reach Adelaide early this afternoon, with hail forecast to fall over the city for a second day in a row.
Neighbours reported hearing a loud bang and seeing a flash of light before Mark Grossman's stone cottage, on a hill between Angaston and Flaxman Valley, went up in flames about 6:45pm.
The CFS said the house on Golden Gate Mines Road was already engulfed in flames by the time firefighters arrived just before 7:00pm.
Firefighters were again called to the house about 7:00am after the blaze reignited.
Mr Grossman has lived in the house for 50 years and said the property was prone to lighting strikes.
"There's been storms like that before," he said.
"Prior to being married, in one three-month period I went through three answering machines in the house that blew up."
Mr Grossman said he was feeding sheep when the lightning hit.
"I got a phone call early evening last night from my wife [and] a few minutes later my son rang to say there's a fire in the house," he said.
The CFS estimated the fire damage at between $200,000 and $250,000.
The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting showers in Adelaide in the early afternoon and hail in the evening.
"So if you need to go out and about, go early," forecaster Jenny Horvat said.
South Australia recorded the wettest April in 22 years, which included the coldest April day since 2008.
More than 90 millimetres of rain fell across Adelaide that month.
