Barnsley sack manager Daniel Stendel after tough start to Championship season

Barnsley have sacked manager Daniel Stendel after their tough start to the Championship season.

The Yorkshire club were thrashed 5-1 by Preston on Saturday, dropping to 23rd in the table after an 11 game winless run in all competitions.

German boss Stendel guided the club to automatic promotion from League One last year but they have been unable to hit the ground running in the second tier.

Club bosses have now opted for a change with the club two points adrift of safety, with Adam Murray taking caretaker charge ahead of Saturday's home game with Swansea City at Oakwell.

A club statement read: "Barnsley Football Club confirms that it has separated from Daniel Stendel with immediate effect. Adam Murray has been appointed caretaker manager."

Barnsley got their return to the second tier off to a perfect start with a 1-0 win over relegated Fulham.

But they have not won a game since, with their drubbing at the hands of Preston proving the final straw.

Stendel, 45, impressed in his first season in English football.

He was handed the job having previously managed Hannover 96, where he worked his way up after coaching their Under 19s.

Stendel hit the headlines last season after a clash with Fleetwood Town manager Joey Barton.

South Yorkshire Police launched an investigation into allegations Barton assaulted Stendel in the tunnel after Barnsley claimed a 4-2 win at Oakwell.

Barton has since been charge with ABH and is due to appear in court this week after being bailed.

Stendel required emergency dental treatment following the incident.
