Barnsley fined by English FA for fans' sectarian abuse of James McClean

Barnsley have been fined £20,000 after some fans directed sectarian abuse at James McClean.

The Championship club must also pay £2.250 in costs associated with the FA’s independent review into the incident on November 9.

A club statement read: "Barnsley has a zero tolerance policy on any form of discrimination.

“(We are) immensely disappointed to have been found guilty of violating FA rulings.

"The club will act upon the findings and will continue to work closely with the FA and (anti-discrimination charity) Kick It Out.”

Barnsley are also threatening to ban fans from games if the terrace abuse is repeated.

Speaking last month, Ireland and Stoke star McClean said he felt huge progress was finally being made in his ongoing fight against sectarian abuse.

That week he also met officials from the FA, Football League, PFA, ‘Kick It Out’ and Staffordshire Police to further address the issue.

McClean is recovering from a medial knee ligament injury that threatens his involvement in Ireland’s Euro 2020 playoff in Slovakia next month.
