Barnsley file Joey Barton complaint to FA

Barnsley have made a formal complaint to the FA and the Football League about an alleged incident between their manager Daniel Stendel and Fleetwood boss Joey Barton after Saturday’s game between the teams.

A club statement published today read: “This is following an alleged incident at the conclusion of the match on Saturday, between Joey Barton and Daniel Stendel.

“The club is also currently working with the police and assisting with all enquiries regarding the incident.”

Stendel was reportedly left with facial injuries at the end of Fleetwood’s 4-2 defeat by Barnsley at Oakwell.

Stendel reportedly gave police his account of the matter yesterday. It is not yet known whether wishes the German to press charges.

Barton arrived at the Fleetwood training ground this morning to take training after he and the players had yesterday off.

The FA have now received referee Seb Stockbridge’s report and it does make reference to an alleged tunnel altercation. English football’s governing body are liaising with South Yorkshire Police but will seek to speak to those involved as part of their own separate investigation.

Barnsley forward Cauley Woodrow said in a later deleted tweet that Stendel had been “physically assaulted” and left with “blood pouring from his face”. Video footage appeared to show Barton being prevented from leaving the ground by a police officer.

A South Yorkshire Police statement read: “This incident will be thoroughly investigated.”

Barton, 36, took charge for his first job in management at Fleetwood last June and has led his side to 11th place in League One.

As a player, he won one England cap and played for seven clubs, including Manchester City and QPR.
