Barnsley boss Markus Schopp's frank admission after Bolton Wanderers Carabao Cup loss

Markus Schopp admitted that Barnsley's exit on penalties at the hands of Bolton Wanderers was the 'worst way' to go out of the Carabao Cup.

The Tykes travelled to the University of Bolton Stadium last night for a first round clash.

Neither side could be separated in normal time, with the game decided on penalties to determine which side would be in this evening's draw for the second round.

Antoni Sarcevic, Amadou Bakayoko, Lloyd Isgrove and Elias Kachunga all scored their penalties for Wanderers to make it 4-4, before Joel Dixon saved from Devante Cole.

And Josh Sheehan scored as Wanderers clinched a 5-4 victory on penalties and booked their place in the next round, the draw for which takes place this evening.

After the Championship side exited the competition, the Barnsley boss accepts the manner of the loss and going out with the final spot kick was the worse way for the Tykes to be knocked out.

And he believes his side did not make the most of the chances they created against Ian Evatt's side, particualrly in the first half.

He told the club website: “It’s the worst way to go out of the cup, with the last penalty.

"In the first 45 minutes, we were going in the right direction, but we were still suffering with the chances we have – we don’t get out what we invest in our moments in the box.

“If we go 1-0 up, it changes the whole game. It is not that way, so we have to improve and we have to work on that, and it’s important for me to see a couple of guys in competition because it’s important for us to get a bigger picture and more ideas about how we can interpret certain situations.

“Everyone did everything in the 90 minutes and we know how it goes with penalties."
