Barnhill residents in Dumfries ensure festive cheer reaches vulnerable people at Christmas

Big-hearted residents of a Dumfries community helped ensure festive cheer reached vulnerable people at Christmas.

Members of the Barnhill Christmas 2020 Facebook group responded to a seasonal appeal to help donate items aimed at making advent more memorable for those in need.

The 139-strong group responded to the call and donated a hoard of items including food, sweets and gifts to help others.

Barnhill’s haul was handed to Summerhill Community Centre, which has continued to support members of the community during the coronavirus pandemic.

Items were earmarked to reach vulnerable families struggling to meet the cost of Christmas, as well as elderly residents the popular centre already supports.

The operation was co-ordinated by the three strong administration team of Jamie Gillan, Zoe O’Connor and Claire Unsworth.

Jamie told the Standard: “We were running a week of Hallowe’en competitions on the page and then we decided it would be great if we could continue and do a week of Christmas.

“We created a list of items where people could put their name against something on the list and donate that.

“But people just donated more and more, it was only supposed to be food originally but we ended up with gifts, books, chocolates and other things as well.”

Jamie added: “We all came together as a community in Barnhill and the amount of stuff people donated was amazing. I’m really proud of the community, I’m proud of the people of Barnhill for the amount of effort they put in.”
