Barnard Castle Police ask people to 'think twice' about visiting beauty spot after influx of visitors

Police are asking people to “think twice” about visiting a Teesdale beauty spot after tourists flocked to the area.

As people take advantage of the warmer weather, Barnard Castle Police say a large number of people are heading to Low Force waterfall.

Due to heavy congestion on the B6277 Bowlees to Ettersgill Beck Road the police have closed one lane.

In a Facebook post, Barnard Castle Police said: “We are still seeing a large number of people visiting Low Force in Teesdale today and due to heavy congestion on the B6277 Bowlees to Ettersgill Beck Road we have closed one lane.

“We understand people want to enjoy the sunshine but we would encourage you to be sensible and think twice about visiting this area.

"If you do visit, please keep 2m apart and take your litter home.

"Our PCSOs Liz Finn and Preet Singh are currently in the area to give advice and deal with any issues."

It comes after Barnard Castle hit the headlines following a visit from the Prime Minister’s chief adviser Dominic Cummings.

Cummings told reporters he made the 60-mile round trip from his parents’ County Durham farm to Barnard Castle to test his eye-sight after suffering coronavirus symptoms.

Boris Johnson outlined a number of new measures that will see the lockdown easing from Monday, with people from different households free to meet up in parks and gardens.

The new rules will allow people to see both parents at once, or both grandparents at once.
