More than £24,000 has been raised by three barmen from Omagh who undertook a daunting triple marathon challenge for the Children’s Cancer Unit.
Shane Horisk’s four-year-old niece Caitlin was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer last year, before getting the all clear earlier this year and Shane and colleagues Micky McBride and Niall McDaid decided to raise money for the charity.
The three marathons involved more than 26 miles each on the row machine, ski row machine and ergonomic bike.
The three barmen, who all work in Sally’s of Omagh, completed the challenge on Saturday and were delighted to see the final total come in for a worthwhile charity.
“Once Caitlin got the all clear we said we would do a bit of fundraising for the Children’s Cancer Unit that helped her,” Shane told MyTyrone.
“We just wanted to give something back as they gave her a second chance at her wee life."
The epic triple marathon took the three lads 12 and a half hours, a mammoth feat especially for Shane, whose training was interrupted after he tested positive for Covid-19.
“We had been training for a right while leading up to it, but we weren’t able to do any training in the six weeks leading up to it because I got Covid," he said.
“We had to put it back then and we had to do it at a later date, but that actually helped us to raise more money, probably at least another £5,000.
“It was tough, especially with no training after Covid. There was cramps where I never thought you could cramp, but we got it done and there was great support for us down on the day.”
