Barman wins 'over £1m' in out of court settlement after losing arm in keg explosion

A barman whose arm had to be amputated after a beer keg explosion has been awarded a reported £1 million in an out of court settlement.

Jye Parker claimed former employer Bar Beach Bowling Club in Newcastle, outside Sydney, Australia, breached its duty of care.

The 29-year-old was placed into a coma and awoke the next day in hospital to find his arm missing following the incident in October 2014.

The avid surfer had sought $2million from the bowling club before they settled for an undisclosed fee on Monday, weeks before going before the Supreme Court, reports The Australian.

Mr Parker lived next door to the bar at the time of the accident and had gone to his friend's aid, who was struggling to get the portable keg system to work.

He removed the hose with a spanner, believing it was blocked, before fitting a new one only for it to explode a short time later.

Following the explosion - described as "like a bomb going off" - people in the bar used their own clothes to try and stem the blood.

The bar claimed the plaintiff's actions showed "negligence" as he failed to take "reasonable care" (Google)

The barman said the keg didn't have a gas regulator fitted, posing a major risk to those in its vicinity.

But while the club accepted it owed a duty of care it denied legal responsibility, arguing the plaintiff's actions show "negligence" as he failed to take "reasonable care".

Mr Parker was lumbered with rising medical costs of over $250,000, including to have a prosthetic arm fitted and wanted the damages to help dig him out of debt, he told the Supreme Court in May.

The case had been subject to a lengthy adjournment due to the need for new medical assessments, when an out of court settlement was reached.

Last year he received $100,000 in a payout from Carlton and Unite Breweries.

The Daily Star reports the undisclosed fee was in the region of £1 million.
