Barlinnie prison visits suspended following new Glasgow coronavirus restrictions

Prison visits to Barlinnie have been suspended immediately following new lockdown measures in Glasgow.

The Scottish Prison Service said the prison is regarded as a household and is within the affected areas so they are banning visits from anyone outside.

Lockdown measures were reimposed on Glasgow, West Dunbartonshire and East Renfrewshire by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon on Wednesday following a rise in cases of coronavirus.

In a statement the SPS said: "Following advice from Greater Glasgow & Clyde Health Protection Team and the Scottish Government we are suspending visits to HMP Barlinnie with immediate effect.

"HMP Barlinnie is regarded as a household and is within the area covered by the recent restrictions. "People coming from the affected areas – Glasgow City, West Dunbartonshire and East Renfrewshire – should not visit any Scottish prison.

"These arrangements will be kept under review and further information will be posted when it is available."

Latest figures show that one person has died after testing positive for coronavirus in Scotland in the past 24 hours and that there have been 156 new cases of  coronavirus  confirmed in the same period.
