Barlinnie Prison inmate death two days after arrival in jail will be probed at inquiry

The death of an inmate at Barlinnie jail is to be investigated at an inquiry later this year.

Stephen Masson passed away just two days after he was remanded to the prison, the cause of his death has not yet been made public.

A Fatal Accident Inquiry (FAI) will be held at Glasgow Sheriff Court to examine the circumstance surrounding the 47-year-old's death, almost three years after he was sent to the jail to await trial on December 4, 2018.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled to take place on Thursday, November 4 at 9am.

FAIs are mandatory under Scottish law when a prisoner dies in custody.

Yesterday we reported that a similar hearing will be held next week into the death of East Kilbride house breaker Steven Gunn at HMP Addiewell.

The 41-year-old was in jail after breaking into a house in the the town in the early hours of August 5, 2018. He died a year into a three year sentence.

His hearing is scheduled to take place at Livingston Sheriff Court on Wednesday, October 13 at 10am.
