Barlinnie prison confirm coronavirus outbreak as prisoners and staff member test positive

A coronavirus outbreak has been reported at HMP Barlinnie after two prisoners and a member of staff tested positive for the virus.

Prison bosses have confirmed that the prisoners, who are situated in the 'A' Hall of the Glasgow jail, are now self-isolating.

A member of prison staff is also self-isolating after testing positive.

An investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the positive cases is now underway.

Inmates on the infect wing, which houses adult short-term prisoners and adult remand prisoners, won't be allowed visitors until October 20.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Prison Service said: "I can confirm two prisoners within 'A' Hall at Barlinnie Prison have tested positive for coronavirus and investigations are underway to establish the circumstances.

"The implications of this outbreak mean all visiting to 'A' Hall has been suspended until October 20th.

"At the moment we believe it has been contained within 'A' Hall.

"Visiting to other wings within the prison remain unchanged."
