TOCHIGI, Tochigi -- Barley is ripe for the reaping in the cities of Tochigi and Oyama, Tochigi Prefecture. The areas are among the nation's top producers of two-row barley, an ingredient used to brew beer.
Farmers have begun cropping the long stalks in their fields, which seen from above create a patchwork of golden barley that pops in juxtaposition with the surrounding rice paddies.
According to JA Shimotsuke, the amount of rainfall affects the quality of the crops, and farmers in the region will have their eyes peeled on the weather forecasts, at least until the early-summer harvest season comes to a close early next month.
