Barking constituency results 2019: Dame Margaret Hodge wins for Labour

Margaret Hodge called for the Jeremy Corbyn and his entire leadership team to step down so Labour could shed its "nasty" image after she stormed to victory in Barking in what was an otherwise devastating night for the party.

After the result was declared Ms Hodge appeared to reference Theresa May's 2002 Conservative conference speech when she said Labour was “now the nasty party".

Ms Hodge, who won 61 per cent of the vote for Labour, said: "There has been a fundamental rejection of Corbyn, his team, his people his programme. We now have to take a long look at how we recreate the Labour Party.

"We have become the nasty party. There has been the anti-Semitism, of which I have been a victim, that the party failed to deal with.

"Giving false promises, making people worried about their national security, giving a muddled view on Brexit is not good enough. All of this has led to the overwhelming result we have got in the country tonight."

Conservatives swept to victory in traditional Labour heartlands across the country, particularly in areas which voted to leave the EU.

Ms Hodge refused to say who she would like to see as the next Labour leader but was adamant that the Corbynites should be removed from power.

Ms Hodge, however managed to secure a majority of over 15,000 in Brexit-voting Barking.

She said: "The whole caboodle needs changing - the leader and the team around him. There is a real pathetic attempt tonight by some in the Labour Party to say our loss is around Brexit. That is a complete failure to understand people’s anger at the Labour Party and Corbyn.”
