Baring up - The Full Monty women who are helping to stage the male strip hit in Newcastle

They say that behind every man there's a good woman and that seems to be true even in the male-dominated world of The Full Monty where - in a new show set to make its debut in Newcastle - it's the opposite sex that is driving the action.

The upcoming musical version of the hit striptease story, due to open at Tyne Theatre & Opera House on Wednesday, boasts an all-female stage crew.

As well as having a first-time director in Sonia Hernandez, from Gateshead, the show's choreographers, musical director and stage manager are all women.

But it seems that the male cast - which includes a familiar face in former ITV newsreader Kenny Toal  - aren't the slightest bit fazed by getting their kit off in front of the ladies.

Choreographer Helen Abraham, from Sunderland, joked: "The challenge has been getting them to keep their clothes on!"

The show, which will run over four nights at the Newcastle theatre, is actually the US musical version of the 1997 British film about a group of unemployed steel workers who turn to striptease to earn much-needed cash.

Former Tyne Tees presenter Kenny, whom plays Jerry Lukowski - the American equivalent of Robert Carlyle's character Gaz in the hit film, has previously spoken of his nerves about the role and its big reveal - the 'full monty' - finale but it seems the cast are now more chilled-out about baring all.

Helen, 37, added: "Surprisingly there have been minimal issues arising from the nudity. We have a very pragmatic, easy-to-work-with bunch of guys.

"My concern at the start of the rehearsals was making sure they were never made to feel uncomfortable. But they’ve all been an absolute dream."

The choreographer, whose assistant is Newcastle College student Steph Crewe, added: “I love the message behind this show - self-acceptance and confidence.

"All of the male characters go on a journey and we can all relate to them in one way or another."

Director Sonia Hernandez, 35, agreed, saying: "I love that this show appeals to all, not just theatre goers.

"Musicals aren't everyone's thing but The Full Monty attracts a range of people, for obvious reasons I suppose!"

The show, which is raising funds for the Tyne Theatre’s preservation trust, will feature a 13-piece orchestra, conducted by musical director Jenni Watson from Gateshead, while Laura Keady-Bennett, from Whitley Bay, will handle its production side in her role as stage manager, including the all-important lighting at the show's end which throws the men into silhouette to protect their modesty.

Sonia added: "I can’t recall a previous production I have been involved in that has had a female director, musical director, choreographer and stage manager.

"But I think it works really well for a show like this as there’s a good mixture of respect and fun."
