Barge gets STUCK and completely blocks off UK river with coastguard on alert

A barge has completely blocked off a UK river and the coastguard has been unable to move it.

Hull's Coastguard Rescue Team were called to the River Hull at 10.45pm last night.

They located the vessel only to find it had become wedged across the entire width of the waterway, Hull Live reports.

After trying to moor the barge, one of its ropes snapped - and the vessel stayed in its place.

The boat couldn't be moored safely, so the coastguard returned to the station, they said.

The barge is said to be being monitored by the relevant authorities, and will hopefully be re-scured soon. Hull Coastguard said via their Facebook page: "A busy time for the team as we were paged to our eighteenth job of the month, this time to a barge that was completely blocking the River Hull near Stoneferry Bridge.

"The team located the vessel quickly and observed it to be wedged across the whole width of the river. Within a few minutes one of the stern morning ropes snapped but thankfully the vessel stayed put.."

"With no safe way for the team to board or moor the barge, we stood down and returned to station. The situation will be monitored closely and passed to the relevant authorities to re-secure the vessel.

"In a mud, water or cliff emergency, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard."

Earlier this year, a large ship floating off the English coast appeared to be sailing without a crew or captain.

It was first spotted in the waters of Kent, and is thought to be drifting from Upchurch towards Swale.

It's thought the vessel lost its mooring, causing it to float away, Kent Live reports.

The owners of the boat are aware that it's drifting and a tug boat has been sent to the floating ship.

A statement from the HM Coastguard said: "At approx. 9.40am today (31 January), HM Coastguard received multiple 999 calls from members of the public concerned about a vessel having broken free of its moorings on the River Medway near Lower Halstow.
