"Trespasser" tasered by police after causing Merseyrail shut down

A bare-chested man was tasered by police today after trespassing onto a section of platform at a Liverpool train station, close to the tracks.

A video from the scene shows the highly-agitated man shouting at two police officers who are standing several paces away from him.

The man, with no top on, appears to have entered an area which is out of bounds at Sandhills station in Kirkdale.

He shouts at the two officers: "I'm waiting, I'm waiting!"

The man appears to be highly agitated, flinging his arms in the air, and at times moves about in an erratic manner.

Witnesses who have gathered to watch the incident tell him: "Chill lad, relax lad."

The footage then shows the Taser, which temporarily disables a person through an electrical current., being discharged.

The officer shouts: "Taser, taser, taser!"

The man is struck and immediately falls to the ground to gasps from the watching crowd.

Witnesses said the man appeared to be in his 20s or 30s, and although it wasn't completely clear, may have been carrying some sort of implement.

Police officers were heard to repeatedly encourage him, "Come off the track, come off the track."

One bystander said: "When he was Tasered, he was down on the floor for about ten minutes but then he was taken to his feet and handcuffed and led away.

"He appeared to be ok."

One onlooker who said he knew the man mentioned he had "received some bad news" earlier that day.

Earlier today, Merseyrail told customers on social media: "Due to an earlier trespass incident in the Sandhills area, the 1520 Liverpool Central to Ormskirk service will terminate at Maghull.

"The 1608 Ormskirk to Liverpool service will be started at Maghull."

The ECHO has contacted British Transport Police and Merseyrail for comment.
