Barclays says new Glasgow campus will not share name of slave plantation owner

The new Barclays bank campus in Glasgow will not share the controversial name of the development where it is being built after claims it was named after a plantation owner.

Its northern European banking headquarters at Buchanan Wharf will be known as the Barclays Glasgow Campus.

But the site's developer, Drum Property, insists it was named not after Andrew Buchanan of Drumpellier but after a Glasgow steamboat captain William Buchanan. It is still being marketed as Buchanan Wharf on the Drum website.

The name change emerged as protests were held around Britain against statues of people associated with the slave trade and buildings and streets named after them.

A Drum spokesperson said: “Buchanan Wharf is now recognised throughout the world as an exciting new development in Glasgow, having been promoted via global campaigns and initiatives in partnership with Glasgow City Council, Scottish Enterprise, the Scottish Government and the UK Government Department of Industry & Trade.

“However, as the Buchanan Wharf site progresses, so will the names associated with the development change as occupiers take ownership of their own buildings and rename them accordingly. This is a natural evolution of any development process.

Barclays has taken a 470,000 sq ft pre-let at the site which will transform the previously neglected south side of the Clyde at the so-called Squiggly Bridge.

A spokesperson for Barclays said: "Barclays has a consistent naming convention for our key global sites. In line with that practice we took the decision last year that our new state-of-the-art facilities in Glasgow will be called the Barclays Glasgow Campus.

"We will be using the city's historic Tradeston district in our address and we have already notified Glasgow City Council of our intention."
