Barclays payments glitch leaves scores of housebuyers in limbo

Scores of house buyers due to take the keys on properties were left in limbo today after Barclays suffered its second payment systems crash in six months.

The bank has apologised for the glitch after customers reported that they could not make payments, including house purchases.

It is the second time the bank’s systems have gone down following a similar experience in October 2015.

It blamed the outage on a “technical issue” which occurred during a routine update to its systems.

“Having taken action services are now returning to normal and we would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused,” a spokesman said.

Couple David and Lizzy Nunn were due to move house today.

They said: “Barclays has made what can be a stressful process even more problematic.

"We just hope that no one has been made temporarily homeless.”

Banks have been increasingly under pressure over payment failures following a series of system outages at Natwest over the last few years.
