Barclays introduces first new micro-branch at MediaCityUK for people on the go

In recent years banks have been forced to change the way customers use their services.

Advancements in technology means fewer people are visiting their local branch and enticing them back has meant branches have had to evolve their premises and services.

From the colourful and fun Metro Bank that is expanding across the UK’s high streets to CYBG’s B Works, a new state-of-the-art SME hub in Manchester city centre, banks are proving that they are moving away from traditional banking.

And now Barclays has launched a new pilot in MediaCityUK introducing a new micro hub for customers and clients on the move.

Barclays first ‘flexible pod’ in Salford will provide access to everyday banking services to the local community as well as specialist support for customers and clients who may be ready to discuss buying a home, or starting a small business.

Barclays new micro-branch is a modular structure complete with comfy seating, all of the kit needed to support conversations, mobile WiFi for staff to connect to bank systems and is situated next to an existing Barclays cash machine for withdrawals and other services.

Appointments can also be booked with branch staff supporting specialist needs such as business banking and mortgages.

Staff are equipped with laptop computers featuring the customer servicing software Barclays uses at permanent locations.

The pod’s design also means that it can be picked up and moved to a new location.

Steve Mitchell, Barclays Market Director for Manchester said: “We’re thrilled to bring our flexible branch to customers and clients based in and around Media City UK, Salford.

"The area is home to the media and broadcast industry and has a thriving residential population.

“Modern technology brings a speed and convenience, which the majority of our customers choose as a complement to their busy lives, but there’ll always be moments where they’d like to sit down and have a conversation with a member of the banking team.

“Our physical presence is evolving to meet those customer needs, both through investment in our permanent branches and in new physical solutions, such as the new micro-branch pod design.”

Steve added: “We’ll establish a permanent presence through our upcoming Media City branch in a brand new building by the end of this year, which provides the perfect opportunity to trial our new micro-branch design to provide services in the interim.

“We’re excited to welcome customers and members of the local community to our pod.”
