The Argentine will miss the visit of Valencia and is in a race to be fit to face Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday. Luis Suarez is fit as Barca look for only their second win of the season.
Valencia, meanwhile, have endured a tough week with the shock sacking of Marcelino, who ended the club's decades-long trophy drought last season with the Copa del Rey.
Marcelino's replacement is former Barca and Real Madrid star Albert Celades, who won La Liga twice with each team and the Champions League with the latter.
