Barcelona v PSG live: Ramos snatches dramatic late winner for Champions League holders

A late goal from Goncalo Ramos gave PSG a famous win against Barcelona in an early season clash between two Champions League favourites.

The hosts started quickly at their makeshift home, with Ferran Torres going close just a few minutes before a superb Marcus Rashford cross enabled the Spaniard to tap in to open the scoring.

Barcelona were in the ascendancy from there but a spell of carelessness in defence allowed PSG back into it, with Nuno Mendes slipping in a perfect pass for Senny Mayulu to equalise before half-time.

The second half began with both sides equal but it was PSG who applied the early pressure, with Bradley Barcola going close before a heroic block from Achraf Hakimi stopped a certain Dani Olmo goal with 20-odd minutes left.

Despite a brief lull, substitutions changed the game as Luis Enrique went for the win, with PSG dominating the final exchanges before Hakimi got in behind the home defence to lay it on a plate for Goncalo Ramos, whose first-time finish secured three points for the defending champions.

De Jong reacts

22:45 , Chris Wilson

“Very disappointing feeling at the end, when you concede in the last minute of the game, to lose at home, you have to be disappointed,” says Frenkie de Jong.

“They were better in the final stages, in the second half in general. We began the game better. So it went back and forward, but it's true they were better in the second half.

We were also missing players. It was a good game to show us where we are at. We are one of the top teams in Europe, there is a long way to go in Champions League still.

“This loss will hurt us, but it will not be decisive. We always want to win, so we are not happy, we know we need to improve, we know that, and will do it,” he added.

There’s barely any time for another chance and the whistle goes with PSG emerging victorious late on!

GOAL! Barcelona 1-2 PSG

21:51 , Chris Wilson

90 +1 mins

GOAL! PSG have surely won it!

Again it looks so simple too. They spread it wide to Hakimi, who himself is in behind the Barca defence on the wing. All he has to do it look up and play an early cross to Ramos, who is also running ahead of the Barca defence, and the Portugues striker side-foots a first-time effort into the back of the net!

Barcelona 1-1 PSG

21:49 , Chris Wilson

90 mins

There’ll be three minutes of added time at the end if this one, with PSG looking the likelier of the team to grab a winner.

Barcelona 1-1 PSG

21:48 , Chris Wilson

89 mins

Torres completely scuffs his effort and that is so wasteful. He’s lucky too, as PSG can’t quite make anything of the counter as Ramos opts to pass rather than shoot in the box.

Barcelona 1-1 PSG

21:46 , Chris Wilson

87 mins

There’s a free header from Mendes at the back post as nobody has picked him up, but he can't get enough on it to trouble Szczesny.

Moments later, the ‘keeper gratefully pounces on the rebound from a cross in his box.

Plenty of PSG pressure to end this one, though Torres has just gone down on the edge of the PSG box. Hakimi is yellow carded and Barca will have a late chance.

Barcelona 1-1 PSG

21:44 , Chris Wilson

86 mins

More subs for Barca as Garcia makes way for Andres Christensen.

PSG are finishing the 90 minutes in the ascendancy!

Barcelona 1-1 PSG

21:43 , Chris Wilson

84 mins

CLOSE! Off the post from Lee Kang In!

There’s some miscommunication in midfield from Barcelona and PSG pounce on the loose ball, shifting it to Kang In before he moves it onto his left foot and rifles a low effort that cannons off the base of the far post!

Barcelona 1-1 PSG

21:41 , Chris Wilson

83 mins

Vitinha’s free-kick from deep ends up winning a corner, before the Portuguese’s cross ends up being headed over by Zabarnyi. He was offside anyway.

Barcelona 1-1 PSG

21:40 , Chris Wilson

81 mins

Yamal has been quieter of late but he reminds the PSG defence that he’s there as he cuts back outside and curls an effort wide of the far post.

PSG make two changes as Mayulu and Barcola come off for Lee Kang In and Quentin Ndjantou.

Barcelona 1-1 PSG

21:38 , Chris Wilson

78 mins

A yellow for Casado now as he follows through on Hakimi. Soft, that one.

Pedri makes way for 18-year-old Marc Bernal, who makes his Champions League debut.

Barcelona 1-1 PSG

21:36 , Chris Wilson

77 mins

Some good defending from Cubarsi there as PSG got into the box and Ramos cut back before winding up the shot, but the Spaniard had read it and was there to clear.

Moments later, Torres does well to track back and prevent Hakimi driving into the box.

Barcelona 1-1 PSG

21:33 , Chris Wilson

75 mins

Both teams are still fighting for control here in what has been a strange first half. There have been chances, but neither side has really managed to dominate.

Pedri is down now after a challenge from Vitinha, but he’s fine to carry on.

Barcelona 1-1 PSG

21:31 , Chris Wilson

72 mins

Good defending from Hernandez there as he steps in to shepherd Yamal away from Rashford’s clever though ball.

Barca make their first subs of the day, as Olmo, Rashford and Martin make way for Marc Casado, Robert Lewandowski and Alejandro Balde.

PSG follow by bringing on Goncalo Ramos for Fabian Ruiz.

Barcelona 1-1 PSG

21:29 , Chris Wilson

69 mins

It’s spread wide to Mendes on the left, and he cuts back a pass to Ruiz on the edge of the box. The Spaniard miscues his first-time shot though, and it runs straight to Szczesny.

Barcelona 1-1 PSG

21:25 , Chris Wilson

66 mins

An interesting sub here as Lucas Hernandez comes on for Mbaye, with Mendes moving to left-wing to avoid having to defend Yamal!

Barcelona 1-1 PSG

21:24 , Chris Wilson

65 mins

CLOSE! How are the hosts not ahead!?

Yamal picks it up on the right and picks out the run of Torres, who’s marauded into the box. He looks to pick out Rashford at the near post but the cross is blocked and it rebounds straight to Olmo, who has a golden chance a few yards out and under no pressure.

It looks destined to be a goal but Hakimi gets back to block a certain goal! Not quite off the line but might as well have been.

Barcelona 1-1 PSG

21:22 , Chris Wilson

63 mins

Yamal lines up the free-kick but he fires over, before the hosts quickly regain possession in their own half.

Barcelona 1-1 PSG

21:20 , Chris Wilson

61 mins

Plenty of gaps in midfield at the moment and PSG almost expose them, with Hakimi almost getting onto the end of a through ball in the box.

At the other end, Mendes looks worried as he fouls Yamal right on the edge of the box, but he escapes without a second yellow.

(Getty Images)

Barcelona 1-1 PSG

21:16 , Chris Wilson

58 mins

Rashford does well to ease some of the pressure, going up the other end and winning a corner after some good carrying. Pedri swings in a cross but Chevalier catches it easily, before Olmo is yellow carded for ending the counter.

Barcelona 1-1 PSG

21:14 , Chris Wilson

56 mins

Plenty of whistles around the stadium, which tells you that PSG are beginning to dominate possession. The visitors are beginning to turn the screw, and they seem to have figured out that Barca are weaker down their left, where Martin got beaten easily moments ago.

Barcelona 1-1 PSG

21:13 , Chris Wilson

54 mins

The first real chance goes PSG’s way, with Mendes finding Mbaye in acres of space down the left with a through ball. He looks up and plays a cross-field pass to Barcola, who escapes the challenge from Martin far too easily before stinging the palms of Szczesny.

The visitors win a corner moments later.

Barcelona 1-1 PSG

21:11 , Chris Wilson

52 mins

Some good dribbling from Mbaye in the Barca box but it comes to nothing as the home defence closes him out.

Barcelona 1-1 PSG

21:10 , Chris Wilson

50 mins

Not a lot to report from the opening exchanges of the second half. Both sides exchanging possession but nothing clear-cut in attack.

Barcelona 1-1 PSG

21:07 , Chris Wilson

46 mins

Early half-chance for Rashford but his shot from distance is blocked.

KICK-OFF! Barcelona 1-1 PSG

21:05 , Chris Wilson

Back underway at the Olympic Stadium!

HALF-TIME! Barcelona 1-1 PSG

21:01 , Chris Wilson

It’s been an intriguing half for the neutral at Montjuic, though it’s a shame PSG are missing so many key players.

They have fared well despite that, though Barcelona will be wondering how they don't have the lead after limiting the visitors to precious little in attack for large periods.

Both sides have been guilty of lacking that final bit of quaity in the final third at times, but it’s all set up perfectly for the second half.

Both sides will be out for the second half shortly.

HALF-TIME! Barcelona 1-1 PSG

The referee brings the first half to an end and we go in level at the break!

It’s been an entertaining game with moments of quality from both sides, though in truth Barcelona will be heading in wondering how they aren’t ahead.

Barcelona 1-1 PSG

20:48 , Chris Wilson

45 mins

We’ll have two minutes of added time here. Barcelona almost craft a chance but some last-gasp PSG defending prevents them finding an opening on the edge of the box.

Barcelona 1-1 PSG

20:47 , Chris Wilson

44 mins

More good work from Rashford down the left and he twists and turns before seeing his near-post cross put behind by Pacho.

Barcelona 1-1 PSG

20:45 , Chris Wilson

43 mins

Nuno Mendes is booked now as he barges over Yamal. The Spaniard will be looking to isolate him in defence now!

Barcelona 1-1 PSG

20:44 , Chris Wilson

41 mins

More PSG pressure almost pays off almost right away, with the visitors wasting an opening before Barcola rinses Garcia but can only fire over the bar.

GOAL! Barcelona 1-1 PSG

20:40 , Chris Wilson

38 mins

The curse of the commentator! Out of nowhere, the visitors are level!

They make it look simple too, with Nuno Mendes dribbling past a couple of challenges before slipping a pass to Mayulu. Cubarsi misreads it and slides in, missing the ball to give the forward plenty of space as he fizzes an accomplished finish past Szczesny.

(Getty Images)

Barcelona 1-0 PSG

20:37 , Chris Wilson

37 mins

Yamal clips a nice ball forward to Rashford and the loanee attempts to squeeze a squared pass to Torres in the box, but again Zabarnyi does well to make sure it doesn’t get past.

Barca are still having all the chances and half-chances at the moment, with the visitors struggling to string much together in attack.

Barcelona 1-0 PSG

20:34 , Chris Wilson

34 mins

First yellow of the day is for Frenkie de Jong as he cynically brings down Nuno Mendes after the Portuguese had evaded three or four challenges between his own half and midway into Barcelona’s.

On second look, the Dutchman rakes his studs down the back of Mendes’ leg a little, and there’s a VAR check here – but it’s cleared.

(Getty Images)

Barcelona 1-0 PSG

20:31 , Chris Wilson

31 mins

Lovely dribbling from Mbaye on the edge of the Barca area and he wins a free-kick as Rashford scythes him down on the wing near the edge of the box.

The free-kick comes in but Szczesny palms it behind for a corner, before Rashford heads clear and Vitinha fizzes an effort well over.

Barcelona 1-0 PSG

20:29 , Chris Wilson

28 mins

Not too far away from the hosts, as a lovely passage of play from Pedri ends with the Spaniard squaring it to compatriot Dani Olmo, who sees his shot deflected narrowly wide.

The corner rebounds out to Rashford but he sees a well-hit, goal-bound effort blocked before Garcia goes down under the challenge form Zabarnyi in the box.

There’s a brief VAR check but it was never a penalty.

Barcelona 1-0 PSG

20:26 , Chris Wilson

24 mins

Oh, close from PSG! The wrong decision from Barcola though.

Yamal loses the ball near halfway and suddenly PSG can spring a counter, with Barcola latching onto the through ball but deciding against taking a shot for some reason! He was 1-v-1 with Szczesny for a moment too!

Barcelona 1-0 PSG

20:24 , Chris Wilson

22 mins

A lovely goal all-round from the hosts, and just as PSG were starting to settle too. The hosts deserve their lead for now though.

GOAL! Barcelona 1-0 PSG

20:21 , Chris Wilson

19 mins

GOAL! The hosts are ahead!

Yamal intercepts Vitinha’s loose pass in midfield and slips it to Pedri. The Spaniard spreads it wide to Marcus Rashford and he plays a superb first-time cross along the ground to Torres, who simply has to tap into the corner from point-blank range!

(Getty Images)

Barcelona 0-0 PSG

20:20 , Chris Wilson

18 mins

Good defending from Martin though he concedes a corner to Mbaye. Nothing comes of the set-piece, however.

(Getty Images)

Barcelona 0-0 PSG

20:16 , Chris Wilson

15 mins

CLOSE! Barcelona should be ahead!

Yamal has the ball on the right and he looks up before fizzing a perfectly weighted through ball with the outside of his foot.

Torres has beaten the offside trap and he beats Chevalier to it, taking it past the ‘keeper before seeing Zabarnyi block his effort off the line.

Good defending from the PSG man in truth.

(Getty Images)

Barcelona 0-0 PSG

20:14 , Chris Wilson

13 mins

PSG have grown into the match but their forwards are looking a little isolated at times, with Garcia the latest to do well to defend against Mayulu.

The French side are happy to recycle possession, though they’re not firing much space in the Barca defence at present.

Barcelona 0-0 PSG

20:12 , Chris Wilson

10 mins

Hakimi wins a corner as PSG counter though it could've been more, with the full-back not managing to pick out a forward.

From the corner, Zabarnyi finds himself unmarked but he heads over from close range.

Barcelona 0-0 PSG

20:08 , Chris Wilson

7 mins

The first 1-v-1 battle between Mendes and Yamal goes the way of the PSG defender, with Yamal initially looking like he'd got past but the Portuguese sliding in well to take it off him in the box.

Barcelona 0-0 PSG

20:07 , Chris Wilson

6 mins

An early foray forward for PSG sees Szczesny collect an early cross under no pressure.

The hosts are already dominating possession at the Olympic Stadium.

4 mins

There was a late change to the PSG line-up too, with Warren Zaire-Emery coming in for the presumably injured Joao Neves.

Barcelona 0-0 PSG

20:03 , Chris Wilson

2 mins

Oh my word. The first flashes of Lamine Yamal as he beats three, maybe four men before slipping it to Torres, who sees his shot blocked from just inside the box.

A couple of tricks in there from Yamal, including a pirouette to beat two defenders.

Barcelona 0-0 PSG

20:02 , Chris Wilson

PSG start with that odd kick-off where they boot it straight out of play. Hopefully not a sign of things to come.

Enrique & Flick on Barcelona vs PSG

19:45 , Chris Wilson

“I am happy to come back, it’s my home. I spent a large part of my career as a player and a manager here,” said PSG boss Luis Enrique ahead of tonight’s match.

“It’s not the Nou Camp but it’s a beautiful stadium. I played here in the Olympic Games in 1992. It’s very special to be here.

“For us, it’s exciting to play against a team with the same mentality. They have a very good coach, who I have known for a long time. The coach and his players will want to put on a good match. The two teams are similar but the key will be in winning the ball back. The future is the match on Wednesday. We will try to prepare for it in the best way possible. In order to win, we will need to play our football well and be mentally strong. It’s a special match for both teams,” added the Spaniard.

Barca boss Hansi Flick said that his side will be "playing against the best team from last season, and it’s a big challenge”.

“PSG are a very strong team,” warned the German, before adding that his team are “really looking forward to” the match.

“I think we need to work on our game plan and what we want to do, like controlling possession and positioning ourselves well. But it won’t be easy, because they’re very good at that too.

"So from the very first second to the final whistle, we’ll have to play at our highest level. This is the Champions League and there’s no room for making mistakes,” he added.

Match stats

19:37 , Chris Wilson

Barcelona have only lost one of their last 12 home matches in the Champions League.

PSG have won their last four Champions League games by a combined scoreline of 12-1, and the last two by 9-0 combined.

Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski has only scored one goal in five Champions League appearances against PSG, with that lone goal coming in December 2017 for Bayern Munich. His minutes per goal ratio against the French side (450) is his worst against any opponent in the competition.

The European Cup holders started their defence with a 4-0 win over Atalanta on matchday one, and most recently they beat Auxerre 2-0 in Ligue 1. However, they did suffer their first defeat of the season just over a week ago, losing 1-0 to Marseille in ‘Le Classique’ at the Stade Velodrome.

Since winning three consecutive UEFA Champions League games against Paris SG in the 2014/15 season – all of which were with Luis Enrique in charge – Barcelona have only won two of their last six meetings with the French side in the competition (D1 L3).

PSG have won their last two games away to Barcelona, both by 4-1 scorelines in the Champions League (February 2021 and April 2024). If they win here, the French outfit will be the first team ever to win three consecutive away games against Barcelona in major European competition.

Head-to-head

19:10 , Chris Wilson

These two sides have faced off 15 times in European competition in the past, with Barcelona winning six, PSG winning five and four ending as draws.

The most recent meetings came in the Champions League in April 2024, where Barca won 3-2 in Paris before falling to a 4-1 loss at home, with Ronald Araujo’s early red card changing the result of the quarter-final.

Of course, these two sides are also responsible for producing one of the most memorable ties of all time, when a last-gasp 6-1 win at the Nou Camp secured a 6-5 aggregate win in the round of 16 in 2017.

out of September’s England squad, the German said he was conscious of the right-back having to adapt to a new life in Madrid, but still stressed another point. This was also a football decision.

Alexander-Arnold isn’t as settled as some of his right-back rivals, and Tuchel wants to see how Xabi Alonso uses him. The England manager knows he’s going to spend a lot of time watching Spanish football this season, and may well witness an interesting dynamic in the Champions League this week.

Atletico Madrid’s trip to Liverpool – before Real Madrid follow in November – showcased it through Conor Gallagher. For the first time in history, all three of the big Spanish clubs feature an English player at the same time.

Barcelona hosts PSG in a Champion’s League clash of titans on Wednesday night.

Last year’s semi-finalists host the reigning champions at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys, with both having made winning starts to their European campaigns.

Marcus Rashford was the hero as Barca swept aside Newcastle 2-1 in matchweek one, while Hansi Flick’s men are high on confidence after a fine domestic start too, as they sit top of La Liga.

PSG meanwhile hammered Atalanta 4-0 in their Champions League opener with four different players on the scoresheet, and Luis Enrique’s men recovered from a first defeat of the season - a 1-0 loss to Marseille - to return to the top of Ligue 1 with a straightforward win over Auxerre last time out.
