Barcelona 'turn down chance to sign Chelsea star Willian on free transfer'

Barcelona have rejected the chance to sign Willian when his contract expires this summer due to his high demands, according to reports.

The Chelsea forward has been linked with a free transfer to the Nou Camp after failing to agree on fresh terms with his current club.

After failing to sign Willian with a £60million bid two summers ago, it was thought Barca would jump at the opportunity to snap up the Brazilian for nothing.

However Sport report the Catalan club have ended their interest in the player due to his requests for a three-year deal with big wages.

Given his status as a free agent, Willian's wage demands are not out of the ordinary, but Barcelona would prefer to sign a younger alternative.

That leaves the winger in limbo, with Chelsea also declining to offer any longer than a two-year extension.

PSG and Tottenham remain interested in Willian, but at 31 they may also see the star as a short-term option.

Willian's agent Kia Joorabchian is at the heart of the discussions, and also represents Barca's Philippe Coutinho, who he is trying to get into Chelsea.

The Blues have reportedly already held talks with Barcelona over loaning Coutinho for the whole of next season.

Barca would prefer a straight sale for the playmaker, and are requesting at least an obligation for Chelsea to buy Coutinho at the end of the loan spell.

Chelsea would prefer an option to buy, even if it means paying a higher fee, but Barca are wary of entering such a deal given the star has failed to impress on loan at Bayern Munich.

Whether a stalemate in Coutinho talks could persuade Chelsea to offer Willian his desired third year remains to be seen, though he feels it is unlikely.

Willian said recently: "Everyone knows my contract is up in a few months and it looks like it'll be difficult to secure an extension. I think it's unlikely that I'll renew because Chelsea offered me a two-year deal, I asked for three and it ended there.

"There were no more talks or negotiations. Chelsea said that three years would be impossible, so at the moment it seems unlikely that I'll extend, but nothing is impossible.

"We don't know what might happen. We might suddenly reach an agreement, but what I can say today is that my contract is up and I'll be free to negotiate with any club."
