Barcelona talent maker salutes Rangers blueprint as he sends stark warning to doubters

Louis Van Gaal's right hand man Frans Hoek has urged Scottish football to embrace change and give Rangers' reconstruction vision a second look.

The Ibrox side's 14-14-18 blueprint proposed a Colts team from themselves and rivals Celtic to join the pyramid and give Scottish football a £700,000 boost over a four-year period.

The Rangers plan didn't get the backing it needed during a Hampden conference between clubs but it could be back on the agenda with teams in Scottish football's bottom two tiers being given the option to go into 'hibernation' next season.

And Hoek reckons the call to allow rising stars from Scottish football's top two clubs to sharpen their skills in the lower leagues is a no-brainer.

The amiable Dutchman has an understanding of the Ibrox side's vision due to his role as technical director of Rangers' American link-up Orange County.

The possibility of introducing B teams to the Scottish league structure has proved to be a thorny issue with clubs down in the lower tiers worried about the knock-on effects.

But the former Manchester United and Barcelona coach insists all 42 teams must look at the bigger picture with Scottish football searching for answers amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking to the Mail on Sunday, Hoek said: "Players from B Teams are better prepared for the highest level. Why? Because we all know that to become a better player, you have to play as much as you can.

"Every country is different, but I have seen first-hand the system work at Barcelona and at Bayern. And, of course, Ajax has the most beautiful example of a youth structure.

"In my conversations with Rangers, I have been told there is quite some resistance in your country. But what I learned quickly in football is that what is good for my country is good for my club.

"Your first loyalty is to your own club but you can't lose sight of the bigger picture. I can't say that loudly enough.

"The football in your country will benefit from this."

And Hoek believes the reason behind the rise of some of the finest players of this generation has been the opportunity to rub shoulders with senior pros at a young age.

Both Rangers and Celtic are blessed with rising stars but he is certain even more would become first team stars if blood and thunder contests became part of their learning curve.

He added: "People think it is strange to be playing against a second team but that response is more emotional than rational.

"It needs to be made clear what the advantages for the country are if you are able to rear more and more talented players in this way.

"In Holland, Spain and Germany, it has been good for football in general. The standard of footballer has improved. And that helps the national team.

"At Barcelona, we had Xavi, Iniesta, (Carles) Puyol and (Mikel) Arteta come through. (Lionel) Messi came later. At Bayern, we benefited from Holger Badstuber and Thomas Muller coming through the same way. When you play with better players, even in street football without coaching, you become better.

"You are up against tougher and older players. So you need to become smart. You become better without even knowing it. You are forced to find your own solutions.

"Some talent is evident very early. Others need time. Players develop at different rates and the B Teams allow for that development.

"It took a little while of course but now people see it as normal. Look at it over five years. Let's see what it brings for all of us. Everybody wants their country to be better. Let's try this and see where we go."
