Barcelona suffer injury blow as Luis Suarez is forced off in La Liga opener

Barcelona's defence of their La Liga crown suffered an early blow after Luis Suarez was forced off in the first half of their opening encounter at Athletic Bilbao.

The Uruguay star was tasked with leading the line for Ernesto Valverde's title-chasers, with star man Lionel Messi ruled out with a calf injury.

But early on in the encounter and it appeared that Suarez picked up a similar issue, as he went down with what appeared to be an injury to his right calf muscle.

The former Liverpool superstar was unable to continue and was replaced by Rafinha, with Suarez's withdrawal allowing Antoine Griezmann to move into his preferred central role.

While it remains to be seen how serious the injury is, it will no doubt be a concern for manager Valverde on the same day it emerged that Philippe Coutinho was closing in on a season-long loan move to Bayern Munich .

Catalan radio station RAC1 confirmed the deal had been struck over a temporary switch to Germany, with the Brazilian left out of the matchday squad for the La Liga opener at Bilbao.

Coutinho was widely tipped to be used as a makeweight in a deal to bring Neymar back to the Nou Camp.

Neymar left Barca for Paris-Saint Germain back in 2017, in a world-record £189million switch, but is keen on a return to Barca before the European summer transfer window slams shut on September 2.

But Coutinho's exit could throw that into doubt, with Real Madrid also weighing up a move.

However with Suarez suffering an injury, Barca chiefs may well opt to use another fringe player as part of a deal that would secure Neymar's Spanish return.

Ousmane Dembele is a player who has previously been linked with a Barca exit, but the forward offers an attacking threat and may well get more first-team opportunities if Suarez does indeed face a spell on the sidelines.
